Apple began rolling out iOS 27 on September 14. At first glance, it looks like an unusually broad release: iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models, the second-generation iPhone SE, and every newer device can install it. But the most prominent additions — Siri AI and the next phase of Apple Intelligence — are available on a much shorter list of phones.
That leaves users with two very different upgrades under the same version number. Older iPhones receive interface changes, Safari improvements, parental-control updates and system features. The new Siri, which is designed to understand onscreen context, personal context and actions inside apps, requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16-series device and later.
One iOS, different experiences
Seeing the update button does not mean access to the new Siri. The regular iPhone 15 and 15 Plus can install iOS 27 but do not receive its headline AI feature. The same is true for the iPhone 11 through iPhone 14 families and the second-generation iPhone SE.
Russian is not included in the first Siri AI release. Apple has not described Russia as a separately blocked region, so the more accurate description is that Russian localization is absent and English-language settings need to be tested independently. Availability also varies by country and device.
What the new Siri can do
Apple says Siri AI can use personal context to find relevant details in mail, messages and photos, understand what is on screen, and complete chains of actions across apps. Users can type requests, use a dedicated Siri app and invoke the assistant from the camera. Some capabilities depend on language, country and support from individual apps.
The initial release is a beta in English. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish will follow in October, but it has not announced a timetable for Russian. Availability on iPhone and iPad is additionally limited in the European Union, while local regulation is delaying the new AI features in China.
AI limits — and a future price
Server-backed Siri AI features, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground and cloud models in Shortcuts now have daily limits. Apple has not disclosed the exact quotas; users are warned when they approach a limit. The company has also said that expanded access will eventually be paid, without naming a date or price.
Worth keeping in mind: Apple presents AI as a built-in iPhone feature, but part of the experience depends on cloud computing and available server capacity. A compatible phone does not guarantee unlimited access to every feature.
What older iPhones still get
The update is not empty without Siri AI. Apple has refined Liquid Glass transparency, added tab grouping and page-change notifications in Safari, expanded parental controls and refreshed system apps. The company also reports faster app launches, photo loading and AirDrop, although those percentages come from its own lab tests rather than independent benchmarks.
For owners of supported older devices, iOS 27 is best viewed first as a substantial conventional system update. Before installing it, make a backup and check reports for the specific model. If the new Siri is the main reason to update, factor in the iPhone model, English-language requirement, regional limits, beta status and daily quotas.
Bottom line
iOS 27 extends the life of the iPhone 11 and other older models, but it does not erase the hardware divide. The operating system is widely available; its most talked-about AI release remains a feature for newer devices and is still not aimed at Russian-language users.
