Meta is moving quickly to turn Muse from a standalone personal AI agent into a broader platform. The company has opened connector submissions to outside developers, allowing businesses to expose their APIs to Muse so users can ask the agent to retrieve information, modify data, place an order or perform another supported action without first navigating a separate app.

The developer opening comes only ten days after Muse launched publicly in the United States on September 8. Meta describes Muse as more than a chatbot: it operates inside a dedicated Muse Secure VM with its own browser and can take actions across services that a user chooses to connect.

Developers bring the API; Muse brings the agent

The model looks different from a conventional app store. According to descriptions of the live Muse Connector Platform, developers explain what their product does and how people are expected to use it through Muse, then submit the integration for Meta review. The company describes functional, security and legal requirements as well as end-to-end testing before an approved connector becomes discoverable in the Muse directory.

That changes what counts as an interface. Instead of searching for an app, opening it and navigating a workflow, a user can describe the desired outcome in natural language. Muse can then route the request to an appropriate connector and work with the underlying service.

Why it matters: if this model scales, some competition between digital services could shift from app stores and search results toward the capability directory inside a personal AI agent. Users may increasingly choose an outcome rather than consciously choosing an app.

Muse already had several ways to reach a service

Meta designed Muse so the lack of an official integration would not always be a hard stop. At launch, the company said Muse could work across connected services from its dedicated virtual machine. TechCrunch also reported that when no direct connector exists, Muse can work with a public API or use its browser to interact with a service.

The new platform makes the direct route more important. Instead of relying on browser automation, a business can provide an official interface to its product. For complex or consequential actions, that can be more robust than having an agent infer a website’s structure and click through a changing UI.

An independent inspection of the platform by CellCog distinguishes between directory connectors reviewed by Meta and custom connections that Muse can establish for an individual user through a service’s API. As of September 19, the public launch page did not yet expose a full SDK or extensive developer specification.

The first new connectors focus on knowledge and meetings

Announcements around the September 18 opening identified Notion and Granola as new connectors, giving Muse access to documents and meeting notes. Multiple sources captured those launches alongside the developer-platform announcement.

Those are revealing early categories. They are not isolated entertainment integrations; they contain information that can feed a longer chain of work. An agent could retrieve a project detail from documentation, cross-reference meeting notes, prepare a follow-up plan and then call another service to act on it.

That cross-service composition is where the agent model begins to diverge from traditional app-to-app integration. Muse becomes more useful not simply as the number of connectors grows, but as it becomes able to combine them into one task.

Payments are part of the platform from the start

Muse already has a commerce layer through Stripe Link. Stripe says U.S. consumers can connect Link to Muse and let the agent make purchases on their behalf. At more than one million businesses that accept Link, Muse can check out using the customer’s saved payment method. For other merchants, Link can issue a single-use virtual card restricted to the approved purchase. The user approves the final transaction amount, while Muse does not see the underlying card details.

The Connector Platform explicitly ties new integrations to Stripe, presenting Link as the mechanism developers can use to accept payments. That makes the platform materially different from early generations of AI plugins that were primarily designed around information retrieval or simple API calls. Commerce is being treated as a normal agent action from the beginning.

For businesses, that raises the prospect of an entirely new acquisition channel. A customer may never intentionally visit a merchant’s website. They may simply tell Muse what they need and let the agent route the order to an integrated provider.

Muse is not supposed to send messages or spend money without approval

Every new capability increases the importance of action controls. Meta says Muse runs inside a dedicated Secure VM and that a separate Sentinel agent controls what can reach the internet. Sensitive actions such as sending email or completing a purchase require user approval. Credentials are stored separately so the model itself does not see passwords or payment details, according to Meta.

Users can also limit a connector’s permissions. In email, for example, access can be restricted to reading or expanded to include sending. Connections can later be revoked.

Those controls become more consequential as Muse evolves into a platform. A mistake by an agent may no longer affect one browser tab; it could propagate through a chain involving calendars, documents, communications and payments.

The agent is expanding beyond the browser at the same time

The connector rollout arrives alongside Muse for Mac. The macOS app can interact with local files, messages, calendar entries, notes and mail in their native applications, with access granted by the user.

That means Muse is gradually spanning three layers: official service integrations through connectors and APIs, websites through browser automation, and local desktop applications.

The result is a more capable agent, but also a much larger permission surface. The closer an agent gets to a person’s actual files, communications and money, the more damaging an incorrect action can become.

Important developer details are still missing

Despite opening connector submissions, the platform remains early. As of September 19, the public page did not disclose a platform fee, a Meta revenue share, a standard review timeline or a detailed standalone set of developer terms. CellCog also found no full public SDK documentation linked from the initial platform page.

A first-hand submission walkthrough published by Stacktree confirms that the intake process is already operating. The form offers routes for an existing MCP endpoint or a raw API, asks for documentation and authentication details, and supports authentication options including API keys and OAuth with PKCE. After submission, the connector enters Meta’s review process, but Stacktree said it was not given a public review deadline.

So this is not yet a mature developer ecosystem with a fully defined commercial model. Meta appears to be building the first layer of supply while testing how businesses should expose themselves to a consumer agent.

The connector platform may matter more than Muse itself

Personal AI agents are multiplying quickly, and features such as research, booking, form filling and browser automation are becoming less distinctive. The more defensible advantage may be the network of services an agent can access reliably and safely.

Meta has a potential distribution advantage here. Muse already operates across mobile and the web, integrates with WhatsApp and Meta’s own services, now has a Mac application, and is gaining an external connector ecosystem. Meta has also said Muse is coming to its AI glasses.

If businesses begin designing APIs specifically for personal agents, the conventional app may no longer be the primary entry point to a service. The agent becomes the interface, while the API becomes the product surface that actually matters.

That is why the opening of Muse Connector Platform is more significant than a routine feature update. Meta is attempting to position Muse as a layer between users and the rest of their digital services. Whether developers are willing to build for that layer — and whether users are willing to trust it with consequential actions — will determine whether it becomes a true ecosystem rather than simply another agent app.
