Online advertising usually ends with a click. OpenAI’s Sponsored Agents are designed to continue the interaction inside ChatGPT: a person who sees a table in an ad could ask whether it fits a room, how many people it seats or how to care for the surface. The company says the conversation will be visibly sponsored, separate from the original chat and unable to influence independent ChatGPT answers.

An ad that can answer back

The potential convenience is obvious: fewer jumps between product pages and quicker answers to a specific question. It also changes the nature of an ad. A sponsored agent can conduct a long, personalised exchange inside an interface people already trust for information.

That is why visual and conceptual separation matters. A brand agent may be helpful, but it represents one company’s offer; it is not a neutral comparison of the market.

Ads Manager uses AI too

OpenAI is also adding an Ads Manager extension to ChatGPT Work. An advertiser can provide a site link or a brief and ask the system to build a campaign, adjust settings, analyse results and suggest a next step. The company says people retain final control over suggested copy and images.

Context-sensitive creative and automatic translation lower the barrier for advertisers, but make review more important. A weak translation or inaccurate claim can appear in a dynamic version seen by only part of the audience.

Why OpenAI is building it

Ads are a way to support free ChatGPT access alongside subscriptions, enterprise products and the API. The attraction is intent: people explain not just what they want to buy, but why and under what constraints. OpenAI says advertisers do not receive private chats and users can control personalisation, while the ad-selection system can still use conversation context.

That is the trust boundary. Advertising may become more useful precisely because it knows more about a person’s immediate need.

Bottom line

Sponsored Agents are a meaningful experiment, not merely another placement format. They make advertising conversational and potentially useful, but require clear labelling and durable boundaries between an independent assistant and a salesperson. The test is initially limited, so the real question is whether those boundaries remain legible as the format expands.
